Today, only red coral and Japanese coral are still used in jewelry. Coral is of organic origin; it is the skeletal remains of a marine animal called a coral polyp. It is a soothing and protective stone.
The Kingman Turquoise Mine is one of the oldest in the Americas. It was discovered by Native Americans over 1,000 years ago. Kingman turquoise is known for its sky blue color and produces many variations of blue turquoise. The Kingman mine also produces green turquoise. The mine has been the largest supplier of turquoise to the southwestern jewelry industry. The Kingman mine was once part of a turquoise boom around 1000 AD, when the Mayan culture used it extensively for adornments. Today, as in ancient times, blue turquoise from Kingman, Arizona, is king. Even though the mine produces all colors of turquoise, green turquoise has almost become equal to blue turquoise in popularity these days.
