Pilot Mountain turquoise comes from a group of mines at the southern end of the Pilot Mountains in Mineral County, Nevada, near Tonopah. The two best-known mines are the Moqui-Aztec Mine (S. Simmons) and the Montezuma Mine (Troy Springs). The Montezuma Mine is still worked two or three times a year and produces a hard, finely veined turquoise that varies in color from bright blue to dark blue, or even a dark blue with greenish highlights. Associated with this material are mottled patterns of light to dark brown limonite. William Miller of Tonopah discovered the Montezuma Mine in 1905.
